Nexus 6 - Nandroid/backup questions

My apologies if this is answered in another thread.

A little background -
I'm asking this question long after owning my N6. I've been running stock rooted without making any backups and had a few questions about backing up and storage space requirements on a device with only internal storage capabilities.

My previous phone (note 2) had an external sd card - I never ran into storage issues when creating a nandroid. I have a N6 with 32 gigs. I'm using a lot of space on the phone - 21 GB of the 25.98 usable. I'm unable to create a nandroid (with data partition) due to space requirements.

What's the best way to transition to internal storage being the only option and what options should I be choosing when backing up/making a nandroid? - Backup without data? (does this defeat the purpose?) Are there other options? Using Titanium backup? Is there a way to nandroid to PC using adb without first having to make the backup on the phone to transfer it over to the PC?

I understand that my best option would be to weed out what is needed and what isn't and free up some space on the phone.

Any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time for any replies.

*EDIT* Sorry I posted this in the wrong forum, my bad.
